How to use DISM commands to repair windows 10 image?

Many times it happens that windows 10 disk image you download might be corrupted and you may not be able to install windows from it. Microsoft has comprised few managerial and useful tools at the disposal of the end user if there is any need. Corruption incurred while installing windows 10 is always a difficult task to remove. In order to solve this a tool called DISM (Deployment Imaging and Servicing Management tool) has been introduced which helps to repair your OS’s installer image. Before we start it is recommended to full backup so that if anything goes wrong you can bring back changes.

Steps to repair Windows 10 images:

Here are the exacts steps you can follow to use these commands to repair your disk image file of windows 10.

STEP 1: Open the start menu by clicking on the windows button on the screen or straight away click the window button in keyboard or press Windows key +X.

STEP 2: Type CMD and right click on command prompt.

STEP 3: There are various ways DISM can be used to repair the windows image i.e. CheckHealth, ScanHealth, and RestoreHealth.

1. Using DISM with CheckHealth option:

This command helps to verify whether any corruption has been incurred. It does not perform any repairs on its own. In order to verify for corruption, type the following command and press enter. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /CheckHealth

2. Using DISM with a ScanHealth option:

This command helps to scan the windows image and find if there is any corruption. ScanHealth switch can take around 10 minutes to complete the scan. In order to scan for corruption, type the following and press enter. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ScanHealth

3. Using DISM with RestoreHealth option:

DISM command with RestoreHealth helps to scan the windows image for the presence of any corruption and also perform a repair automatically by itself. But unlike ScanHealth switch, RestoreHealth switch can take around 20 minutes to complete its process. In order to scan for corruption, type the following command and press enter. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth

While running this process of DISM by RestoreHealth or ScanHealth you can observe that the process seems to stuck in-between 20% and 40%. But don’t panic, it’s a normal action.

When you try to run the command mentioned above, DISM will attempt to replace the damaged files using Windows Update. But when there is a problem with the windows update components, then you have to specify the good files that you know in order to repair the image.

4. DISM with source option and RestoreHealth:

By using Source switch alongside RestoreHealth you can determine a new location for known good files. Now type the following command and press enter. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth /Source:repairsource\install.wim or in order to avoid DISM using windows for online images, enter DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /RestoreHealth/Source:repairsourse\install

5. DISM with an install.ESD file:

In order to repair the windows image with an install.ESD file, enter the following command. DISM /Online /Cleanup-Image /ResearchHealth /Source:C:\$Windows.~BT\Sources\Install.esd for limited action of windows update

The DISM tool will always create a file at %windir%/Logs/CBS/CBS.log when any problem has been captured or fixed. At last reboot your system in order to give effect to the actions.
